Yoga

Yoga is one of the oldest practices in the world and dates back over 5,000 years. A physical, mental, and spiritual discipline, yoga is widely practiced today; over 300 million people participate in yoga all across the world. The rise in popularity of yoga has been attributed to its potential health benefits: improving fitness and flexibility while reducing stress and anxiety. 

Practicing yoga can seem intimidating at first. We’ve put together some basic poses to get you started on your journey to find your inner harmony.

Stretching

Did you know that you should be stretching every day? You may think of stretching as something that only runners and athletes do, but in reality, everyone benefits from it! Without regular stretching, muscles become short and tight, which puts you at risk for joint pain, strains, and other injuries. If you’re new to a regular stretching routine, why not start today? Be sure to focus on the major areas of your body that help with mobility: calves, hamstrings, hip flexors, and quadriceps. For upper-body relief, try moves that stretch the shoulders, neck, and lower back.

Meditation

These days, with the greater need to reduce stress in the midst of our busy schedules and demanding lives, meditation is increasing in popularity. In a simple sense, meditation can be defined as taking charge of your mind; it allows you to train your attention and awareness to create a mentally and emotionally calm and stable state of mind. Meditation is simple, inexpensive, and does not require any special equipment, so anyone can do it!

One thing to consider when practicing is guided vs. unguided meditation. With guided meditation, a teacher or narrator guides you through the basic steps of the practice, either in person or via a meditation app like Headspace. In unguided meditation, you meditate alone without someone else explaining the process. Guided meditation is good for beginners whereas unguided meditation allows you to choose your own technique, duration, and degree of silence.
